Patrick Winfield works in various mediums and processes including photography, collage, stenciling and mixed-media.
He creates his large-scale composite grids from single pieces of Polaroid integral film.
The visual language deals with figure studies, landscapes, still life and a fusion of all three that combines straight photography with photogram (camera-less) techniques.
The representational composite pieces, such as the landscapes and figures, are studies on perspectives. Instead of being fixed, static or standing, it is a walking perspective. Not an instant view, but a clustering of memories and visuals.
Using Integral films; it is about the flow of working with images as soon as they are created. Patrick equates the process to drawing.
"When a photo comes out of the camera I can see if I want to adjust it or take another shot almost instantly. I can decide to continue with the current line or create another direction to the piece altogether. The immediacy and characteristics of the Polaroid film is so unique and appears to be infused with a sense of nostalgia that is so
seductive."
